WinCC OA Selects TimescaleDB as Its Standard Time-Series Database
Together with Tiger Data, the creators of TimescaleDB, we have reached an agreement that establishes TimescaleDB as the standard time-series backend for WinCC OA - and makes Tiger Data's commercial products available as a scalable upgrade path for our customers and partners.
Proven at the World's Most Demanding Environment - CERN
This decision did not happen overnight. It is the result of a successful real-world pilot that we conducted together with CERN, where we co-developed the NextGen Archiver for WinCC OA using TimescaleDB as the database backend. That system today powers more than 800 mission-critical SCADA applications at CERN and processes hundreds of gigabytes of time-series data every single day.
For us, that pilot was the proof we needed.

Available with WinCC OA Version 3.21 - This Year
We know that our customers value continuity and want to adopt new capabilities without disruption. That is why we are introducing TimescaleDB support already in the current WinCC OA release 3.21, planned for later this year. There is no need to wait for the next major release cycle - the new time-series backend will be available to our customers and partners right away.
Enterprise-Grade Options for Demanding Deployments
For deployments that require capabilities beyond the open-source foundation, we are offering two commercially supported upgrade paths in collaboration with Tiger Data:
- TimescaleDB Enterprise for high-performance on-premises deployments with advanced features and dedicated support
- Tiger Cloud a fully managed cloud platform for time-series, analytics and AI workloads
The agreement also includes jointly developed reference architectures, coordinated documentation, and a shared support model between ETM and Tiger Data - ensuring our customers receive seamless assistance across the full stack.
