FAQ from CERN

Post by burkimsher »

Dear All,

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva, Switzerland, maintains its own FAQ re PVSS questions.
The FAQ is visible externally at

http://cern.ch/wikis/display/EN/PVSS+Service+FAQ

Suggestions, corrections and improvements, welcome!

It's a very good resource that I have used myself many times.. the only thing missing is the ability for a user/visitor to ask questions, that's what I like about this forum. The only thing is that the kind of questions I keep asking tend to be support related which is not allowed.

I had a go at creating a Q&A site for control and automation related questions a while ago based on a platform similar to StackExchange (StackOverflow) but haven't really spent much time promoting it. Its called LogicQA and you can get to it on www.logicqa.com or better yet www.wincc-oa.com :) let me know what you think.

Hello Paul,

I had a quick look at the CERN FAQ page and found some nice and useful entries.

Some items are quite out of date, especially the section "PVSS Performance".
Maybe you should make an update of these entries after doing tests with the newest version on new hardware.

The entry "What are :_offline.._value and :_corr.._value and where are they stored?" is not correct. I didn't read it completely, I only had a look at some parts.
E.g. dpGet() for an _offline.._value is not useful. The _offline.._value is read with dpGetPeriod() or with an SQL-TIMERANGE-statement.
The _offline-value is stored in the database, it is not computed on the fly.

Keep up the good work!

Best Regards
