DNP3.0 variation in address panel

I would like to know what is the use of variation in DNP3.0 (Client) address panel?

With the variation field you can specify a specific variation for an object group. In most cases it works without specifying a variation, but it is possible if it is needed.
In the online help you can find the variations under: Drivers -> DNP3 -> Compatibility of the DNP3 Driver (Interoperability).

I tried to set specific variation in address panel but I didn't see any message in Wireshark? Would it be possible for you share use case? I am interested to know that in which case it is set at client level.
