Dongle license for WinCC OA, Linux Guest OS, ESX host

Post by jbornemann »

ESX hardware is usually not equipped with USB slots to mantle USB devices, especially license dongles. Solution of "USB over IP" is suggested in general. Is there any experience about possible hardware / software, which solves that issue? Side condition is WinCC OA, installed on Linux guest system, running on ESX server, to be licensed with Wibu Key Dongles via USB/IP.

Thanks in advance !

Hi Jörg, I have used USBAnywhere with success (in a Windows environment) on an ESXi system.

This is not a supported option however for a production system based on the information in the help file;
Dongles (USB) are not supported on VMWare ESXi servers. Each VMWare image on the ESXi server must have its own license.

Since version 3.12 the SEH myUTH-80 USB dongle server is officially supported. The configuration tool 'InterCon-NetTool' is also available for linux, so I assume it also works under linux.

Hello,

as described in the whitepaper for the SEH dongleserver it can only be used in Windows systems.
We didn't do tests with Linux because not all necessary software parts are available for Linux.

@Leopold: I know that the whitepaper uses the 'myUTN Manager' tool, which is only available on windows and mac os. But the 'InterCon-NetTool' is another configuration tool, which is also available for linux.

a) as siemens / etm states in

https://portal.etm.at/index.php?view=it ... &Itemid=54

vmware esxi 5.1.0 and 5.5.0 belong to their supported wincc-oa platforms.

b) joerg bornemann and the waste majority of wincc-oa users do not want illegal copies of their wincc-oa-solutions. because host based licences are week in a virtual environment (keyword: VM cloning), usb-dongle based licences are the one and only solution available.

if wincc-oa-customers shall take a) seriously and the b) is true, then wincc-oa customers can expect clear instructions howto implement usb-dongle-based licences in an esxi environment from siemens / etm.

@ leopold knipp: is etm willing to provide these instructions? and if yes, when?
