Desktop UI freezes when online DB backup runs on server

I've raised this as a support case, but perhaps someone's seen something similar over here already.

I've got a simple set up with a single simplex server (3.16 P016) and a client connected via Desktop UI. The server is configured to run an online DB backup every day at 4:00AM and if a Desktop UI session is running (which it always is as this is a support related application) it will freeze and won't spring back into action, even after the online DB backup is finished (which only takes a few seconds btw). It requires a force stop from Windows and a manual restart. I've also manually triggered the backup and confirmed this is what causes the Desktop UI freeze.

Any ideas on how to fix this? is it even fixable? for now I've disabled the online DB backups, so that nothing interrupts the Desktop UI session, but it's not ideal.
