If I change the alivetimeout in the config file would it help correct this issue? These remote units are small servers that are on cellular connections, but we're above the minimum stated networking requirements by quite a bit. Are there other changes I need to make in order for them to stay connected?

Yes, with the config entry aliveTimeout in the [dist] section you can define the timeout for the dist connections.
