Distributed Management

Post by jiji.thankappan » Thu May 16, 2019 10:17 am

Hello all,

In distributed manager Architecture, can we distributed the driver managers on different machines.
and can more than instance for the same driver (bacnet for example ) running independently on separate machines.

Yes, it is possible to start a driver manager on a remote machine.
If you have several drivers of the same type you can start every driver on it's own computer. How many drivers of the same type can connect to a WinCC OA server should be described in the WinCC OA Documentation.

Why do you want to start the drivers on own computers?

Please keep in mind that you have an additional network connection (possible cause of failure) if you are starting the driver on a remote machine.

the reason behind distributing the driver managers over many machine that we are having a largo number of I/Os, over 600K most of it are BACNET,
so because we believe it will be too much load to Run the Drivers for all this number on single machine.
in the same time we don't want to go for distributed system architecture , it will expensive and we only need to only to distribute the i/O collection

If you are starting the drivers on several machines which connect to the same server you still will have a WinCC OA server where the Event Manager has to handle data for all the drivers.

Are you sure that your server system is capable of handling data for all the drivers?
How many value changes per second do you expect as constant load in your system having 600.000 IOs?

Hello Leo,

In regarding the case mentioned by mohammed, what are the best practices in WinCC OA to handle such number of BACnet properties licensed ?
According to my understanding there are several limitations here:

- The BACnet driver can handle 5000 Object, objects average number of properties is 30 for example so the counting will be 150K, in that case one BACnet driver can't handle the whole project so it is an obligation to distribute. but what about multiple BACnet drivers in the same project ? what are the limits in that case ?

- The Event Manager and smoothing config for these properties, smoothing will depends on the system nature; it can be set to match the project requirements. but what about the alarms generated in distributed architecture servers that have continues traffic to master/main distribution project, is that requires some sort of special calculations ?

- Polling interval tuning. in most BACnet interfaces unsolicited settings is made to reduce the traffic as much as possible and to keep the interface reliable, as long polling periods shall be used only in very slow processes.

Are there any limitation in engineering such project ?, is the distributed managers principle valid for such project ? what is more proper for this project going with multiple BACnet managers with 50K, 25K or maybe less, or going with 100K per project ? (Distributed Architecture)

Regards
Maher
